The LORD Protects Elijah

Elijah was a faithful prophet of the LORD who made sure to go and speak to whomever the LORD wanted Him to impart His message to. The son of Ahab, Ahaziah, had been engaged in spiritual immorality by going after other gods. Elijah was sent by the LORD to tell Ahaziah that since he had abandoned the LORD, the LORD had abandoned Ahaziah. Ahaziah was king and had more responsibility because he served as an example to his people.

Elijah does not think twice and goes directly to Ahaziah’s men and tells them to tell Ahaziah that Ahaziah had gone after other gods and because of this his people had strayed. This is impressive in the sense that Elijah never doubts his duty to do the will of the LORD. Instead of questioning the order, he followed the order.

The men of Ahaziah tell Ahaziah what Elijah had stated and Ahaziah wants to know who this person was to tell the king this. He sends a band of fifty men towards Elijah to see why he had stated this and the LORD delivered Elijah from those men. Ahaziah again sent another band of men which again were destroyed because of the protection that Elijah had from the LORD. The LORD spoke to Elijah and stated that the third time it would be safe for Elijah to go with the men.

“Then the angel of the LORD said to Elijah, ‘Go down with him; do not be afraid of him.’” – 2 Kings 1: 15

Similarly, the LORD protects us when we are in the will of the LORD. Psalm 23 further reinforces the security that the LORD provides in addition to the way he continually protects us from our enemies and those who wish to do us harm.

“Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of darkness, I will fear no evil for thou art with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” – Psalm 23: 4

The LORD shows us not only through his living word the protection and love He has for us, but our LORD is a LORD of action as well. Praise to the LORD!
