The Calming of the Storm

“One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, ‘Let us go across to the other side of the lake.’ So they set out, and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. And they went and woke him, saying, ‘Master, Master, we are perishing! And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm.” – Luke 8:22-24

There are many instances in the Holy Bible when we are reminded of the peace of the LORD. This peace is a peace that surpasses understanding as it can bring about our stability and serenity. While we may attempt to gain this peace in multiple ways outside of the Father, there is only a lasting peace that is given through the LORD. The LORD is able to give and take away peace.

In this example, the disciples had decided to move to another side of the lake by going in a boat. While they were traveling, there was a sudden impromptu storm that occurred which they were certainly not prepared for. How many times has life thrown an unexpected storm in our lives? How many times has life blown the waters over the boat and we felt that the boat was filling with water? How many times may we have wanted peace during the circumstance but instead we decided to fix it ourselves. In this passage, we are reminded of what we are to do.

We are to have faith. They could have rebuked the waters and calmed the sea if they had the faith that Jesus had instilled in them through his examples. They did not know they were able to do this, but were repeatedly told to have faith. Even through this, they still did the correct action as they woke up the one who could calm the storm. They awakened Jesus who was able to bring peace to an otherwise turbulent event.

When the storms of this life are knocking down the sails of the boat, and water is getting into the boat, and the winds are whirling past bringing shivers, what are we supposed to do? We can be passive and let the boat be driven by the storm, or we can be active and rebuke the storm and speak to our LORD and Savior who will provide us a way to calm the storm. The storm ceased. There was calm.
