Jeremiah, the Prophet
“And the LORD said to me, ‘Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem: Hear the words of this covenant and do them. For I solemnly warned your father’s when I brought th m up out of the land of Egypt, warning them persistently, even to this day, saying, Obey my voice. Yet they did not Obey or incline their ear, but everyone walked in the stubbornness of his evil heart. Therefore I brought upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do, but they did not.” – Jeremiah 11: 6-8
Jeremiah tells us about the word of the LORD that he was able to proclaim to the people of Israel. We are reminded that the Prophet is sent to proclaim the words of GOD as a rebuke to the wickedness that existed. GOD tells Jeremiah to prophesy against the people of Israel because they had learned to commit idolatry rather than live within the commandments.
We learn that GOD sends Jeremiah to preach to turn their stubborn hearts towards good and away from evil. The people were not obeying the word that GOD had given them and continued breaking the first commandments. Jeremiah the Prophet continued to preach on different occassions to tell the people that GOD was showing grace and forgiveness if they turned from their sins.
In a similar manner, GOD shows us in Jeremiah the grace He gives through the prophets and through His Son Jesus Christ. While there was Sin, GOD wants to forgive us and help us see that we can turn from our sins to everlasting life. Jeremiah serves as a prophet but also an example of the opportunities that Jesus Christ gives to those that have sinned to turn from sin into life.
